This report comes in from our East Coast team captain, Tom Horrocks:
The New England Cyclocross season kicked off Sept. 13 at the Riverfront Park CX in Hartford, Conn., which is to be the site of the 2017 USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championships. Racers were presented with a fast, moist course, soaked from overnight rain.
Squadra Flying Tigers presented by Jamis Bicycles, were in force with riders Tom Horrocks and Andrew Borden jumping in for a pair of races each to get the season underway. Piloting the new Teal Fo’ Real Jamis Supernova, old-school Campy guy Tom Horrocks was racing SRAM for the first time, and despite a few miss-shifts and hitting the deck a couple times on the moist grass, he managed to finish 8th against a solid Master’s field.
“It was great to get up to race speed again, really test the fitness and see what things I need to work on,” Horrocks said. “SRAM certainly has a different feel than Campy, but the CX1 drivetrain works so well for Cross. The new Supernovas ride so solid and the eye-catching color brought numerous compliments.”
Both Andrew and Tom started the Single Speed race, however, Andrew’s time at the front was short-lived as a mechanical knocked him out of the race just a half lap in. Tom, meanwhile, jumped away with three other riders and set the pace for the rest of the race. A late-race stick into rear cog sidelined Tom with one to go, but he jumped back in and managed to salvage a podium spot in third place.
The Cat 3/4 men’s race brought out the sunshine and the Supernovas! Rolling off the start, Jamis New England Sales Rep Matthew Snow got off to a great start, but Jamis Inside Sale Guy Phil Fragale took the hole shot aboard his Supernova. Andrew then shot past the Teal Fo’ Real duo and set the early pace, distancing themselves from the field. After sitting on second wheel for a couple laps, Andrew made his move and rolled away from the field for his first victory of the season, and first flying the X-Men kit.
